Hawthorne & Heaney for Charlotte Stockdale’s Met Gala Outfit

May 2, 2017 by Natasha Searls-Punter

The first Monday in May each year is always a prestigious day in the fashion calender as it marks the opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s new exhibition and therefore the Met Gala. This year, the exhibition is dedicated to Comme des Garcon’s Rei Kawakubo and is entitled ‘The Art of In-Between’. Taking its theme for the Gala from this year’s muse, the attendees dressed to impress in their own interpretations of Avant-Garde.

You may remember a series of silk jackets we did for the Accessories Brand Chaos last year, this year’s Met Gala gave us the opportunity to work with Chaos again as we were embellishing the outfit of Chaos’s Charlotte Stockdale.

They wanted to create a black on black piece so we made the embellishments all about the texture and relief, working with different weights and qualities of thread to provide definition. Some sections were super dense and flat to the fabric whilst others were given height of various levels within the machine embroidery.

Some sections were cut open to provide another texture with fluffy edges which creates a very matte deep black effect against some of the shinier threads.

The whole back piece centers around the Chaos logo which was treated as if it were a traditional heraldic piece. This became the base on which we could build by hand. A variety of beads were applied into the machine embroidery such as bugle beads and cut jet.

As with most of our bespoke pieces, Charlotte’s initials were integrated into the design in the same heraldic style as the mantelling around the logo.

I think you will agree that the final effect is pretty phenomenal when the machine embroidery, hand embroidery, beading and tassels all come together.

Hawthorne & Heaney Does Dressage Costumes

February 4, 2016 by Natasha Searls-Punter

Once in a while, we get asked to produce something a bit out of the ordinary and this is one such project that ticks all the boxes for us; embroidery, heraldry, animals. We have been working on a piece for a dressage costume for a ‘Nutcracker’ themed performance for which we produced a scarlet red saddle cloth to finish off the outfit.

We started by taking some measurements and fitting the model for her piece, she was somewhat confused by the process…

The draft was then refashioned in the right fabrics, a mixture of heavy calico and melton military cloth with a gold lace trim.

We also machine embroidered this HH monogram in raised gold thread which was then applied.

Hawthorne & Heaney on Family Crests

July 31, 2014 by Natasha Searls-Punter

We’ve been feeling a little nostalgic this week and have been looking back in our archives.  This mostly consists of Heraldic embroidery which is Claire, our founder’s, speciality.  Consisting mainly of Lions and Unicorns ….. over the last three years we have built a rather remarkable collection of embroidery artworks.

This traditional style of embroidery, when done well, hinges on padding (‘raisings’ for the initiated) to create the wonderful dramatic pieces we are best known for.  Above you can see the padding underneath and the finished stitches which are a combination of silks, accented with goldwork.

This style of crest can be found in both family histories and established businesses, centring around the escutcheon (shield) which displays the ordinaries and common charge on the field.  The complexity will depend on what level of acheivement the bearer is entitled to. The below is an example of a full heraldic achievement which consists of shield, supporters, crest, and motto bannered underneath.

We can also offer a drafting and framing service along with the embroidery.  Prices start from £95 depending on size and complexity.  A piece like this will last a lifetime, making a beautiful birthday or wedding gift. Alternatively it could make an intriguing trophy piece or a great talking point for a room.
